What you need to know about thumb sucking and pacifiers

As every parent knows, certain habits can be exceptionally comforting for toddlers and children. The simple acts of clutching a teddy bear or a favorite blanket can provide a sense of security and contentment. The same is true for oral habits such as a pacifier, thumb, or finger sucking. However, keep one thing in mind. While these oral habits serve to soothe babies and toddlers, if they persist too long, they can affect a child’s dental and facial development. At our office, we provide the guidance and care required to support the development of aligned, attractive, and well-functioning smiles.

As your child matures and grows

While most toddlers give up a pacifier, thumb or finger sucking habit between two to four years of age, a harmful oral habit that is still present when the permanent teeth come in, increases a child’s risk for developing a bad bite. If by the age of five or six years, your little one is still using a pacifier or sucking a finger, constructive and gentle intervention is needed. It’s also a good idea to get an orthodontic evaluation at this time. During this visit, our orthodontist will examine your little one’s smile and check for any habit related alterations to the alignment of the teeth or jaws. As part of this assessment, we’ll also evaluate soft tissue positions and movements during swallowing, speaking, as well as other aspects of oral function. As indicated, we’ll discuss habit control strategies and make recommendations for either interceptive or future corrective orthodontic care. Our office will also follow your child’s bite and facial development as they grow and keep you apprised of any treatment needs along with a timetable for care.

Compassionate and skilled care

It’s essential to keep in mind that helping your child stop a harmful oral habit requires patience and understanding. Any intervention should be sensitive and constructive as well as involve the full cooperation of your child. Because they are trained and knowledgeable in all aspects of occlusion, facial development, and jaw growth, an orthodontist can provide both the useful guidance and orthodontic therapy that’s needed to keep the growth and development of your child’s smile on track. At our office, we’re dedicated to providing the highest quality of advanced and compassionate orthodontic care. Foods to eat – and avoid – when you wear braces

Although braces have become more streamlined and efficient with modern technology, it’s still important to be careful not to damage them and to establish an effective oral hygiene routine. Not only are brushing and flossing more challenging with braces, but you also need to be aware of how your diet needs to change. Certain foods can damage components such as the wires, or even the bracket itself. At our office, we’ve prepared a handy checklist that can serve as a convenient reference guide for you.

The good news is that many foods are okay to eat with braces. In general, you will want foods that are softer in texture, especially for that period right after having your braces tightened.

Foods you can eat:

• Dairy: soft cheese, pudding, milk-based drinks, yogurt

• Breads: soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins

• Grains: pasta, soft cooked rice

• Meats/poultry: soft cooked chicken, meatballs, lunchmeats

• Seafood: tuna, salmon, crab cakes

• Vegetables: mashed potatoes, spinach, beans

• Fruits: applesauce, bananas, fruit juice, fruits cut into pieces

• Treats: ice cream without nuts, milkshakes, Jell-O, soft cake

Foods to avoid:

• Chewy foods: bagels, licorice

• Crunchy foods: popcorn, chips, ice

• Sticky foods: caramel candies, chewing gum

• Hard foods: nuts, hard candies

• Foods that require biting into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots

A cautionary note: It’s important to remember that your braces are not a diet.Patients with braces can sometimes tend to miss key nutrients in their diet because they are avoiding certain foods, especially in the period after their braces get tightened. Make sure that you are getting your recommended daily dose of protein, fiber, calcium, and iron from the foods you eat.

Teen Braces

At our office, we’re dedicated to helping you and your loved ones smile with confidence and ease. Our skilled and experienced orthodontists are specialty-trained and are well equipped to address the unique orthodontic needs of patients ranging from childhood and adolescence, all the way up through adulthood. As a state-of-the-art practice, we offer the latest options in care, including low-profile metal braces, as well as a variety of discreet options such as Invisalign®[1] clear aligners. Whether your children are due for their first orthodontic evaluation, or your teenagers require care, you can count on us to work closely with you to find the most suitable treatment options for the best outcomes of care.

When your children reach their early teens, they’re generally in what’s called the late mixed dentition stage. This is the age when most of the permanent teeth are in place and a few baby teeth remain. If the need for orthodontic treatment is indicated, you can rest assured that we will use your child’s growth and development to their fullest advantage. As most parents are already aware, the teenage years are an age when your kids not only begin to acquire the characteristics of a more adult appearance, but also a heightened sense of self awareness. During this period of development, building self-confidence and investing in peer relationships are of increasing importance. A healthy, well-aligned smile can help your teens to develop a more positive self-image and build their self-esteem. In addition to the aesthetic rewards of a well-aligned smile, crooked teeth can predispose your teens to a number of health issues including the development of dental disease, headaches, or TMJ. As skilled providers of care, we offer a complete selection of braces to address the unique requirements of every smile.

Healthy Well-Aligned Smiles!

While the most apparent benefit of well-aligned teeth is an attractive smile, straight teeth are also essential for maintaining optimal oral health and function. At our office, we specialize in addressing teeth that are crowded, gapped or crooked to correct malocclusions and create beautiful smiles.

A poorly aligned smile affects oral health and function in multiple ways:

  • A significant overbite leaves protruding top teeth less protected and more vulnerable to injury.
  • An open bite with a space between the upper and lower teeth can affect how you speak, chew and swallow.
  • Crooked teeth and discrepancies in jaw relationships can interfere with the normal opening and closing of the jaws and cause unhealthy shifts that produce contribute to TMJ dysfunction and pain.
  •  A malocclusion can also result in abnormal wear patterns of the teeth as you bite and chew.
  • It’s more difficult to keep a misaligned smile clean, which results in an increased risk of tooth decay as well as periodontal problems.
  • Severe jaw growth discrepancies and the resulting malocclusions can have significant physical and emotional consequences

A healthy, functional, and attractive smile requires teeth that are straight and jaws that are well aligned. As a skilled specialist with several years of advanced training, an orthodontist not only has comprehensive knowledge of dental and facial development, but also the expertise to correct misaligned teeth or improper jaw relationships. Whether it’s the movement of a few teeth, the alignment of an entire bite, or the surgical and orthodontic correction of severe jaw discrepancies, an orthodontist is well equipped to achieve optimal cosmetic and functional outcomes of care.

The value of a healthy and attractive smile is priceless. While orthodontic care requires an investment of time and resources, the benefits to your oral health and overall       well-being are worth it! At our office, we’re dedicated to providing the highest quality of skilled and compassionate care. For more information on our office and the many services that we provide, give us a call today.

A New Type of Braces

At our office, we want every patient to enjoy the benefits of a well-aligned and healthy smile. With Invisalign®* treatment, we offer orthodontic care that is comfortable, convenient, and so discreet that no one will ever know you are undergoing treatment.  Our state-of-the-art practice welcomes patients of all ages for care and is well equipped to address all your family’s orthodontic needs.

A straight and well-aligned smile is not only attractive to look at, but it’s also easier to keep clean and maintain. As food and plaque can easily accumulate around severely crowded, spaced or rotated teeth, they become more susceptible to both cavities and gum disease. Moreover, an untreated malocclusion also increases one risk for jaw dysfunction and TMJ problems.

Now that orthodontic treatment has entered the age of aligners, more and more patients are opting to undergo care to straighten their smiles. With Invisalign treatment, a prescribed series of custom aligners are fabricated to incrementally move your teeth into their correct positions. Every two weeks or so, our dentist swaps out your current aligner for the next one in the sequence. Made of clear, BPA-free plastic, your Invisalign aligners offer the ultimate in discretion, comfort, and convenience. Removable for brief periods of time each day, your aligners allow you to continue to eat all your favorite foods as well as brush and floss with ease.

Our office maintains a position at the forefront of the latest advances in care to provide our patients with the highest quality services. Whether you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment or other methods of orthodontic care, we can help you achieve a well-aligned and attractive smile.

Keeping Your Braces & Your Smile Clean

A good bite with teeth that are straight not only looks good, it contributes to one’s overall oral health and well-being. At our office, we provide a comprehensive selection of orthodontic services to help children as well as adults of all ages improve the alignment, look, health, and function of their smiles

One of the keys to achieving a beautiful smile with orthodontic treatment is taking proper care of both your teeth and appliances. It is important to be mindful of what you eat, practice good oral hygiene, and avoid any harmful oral habits. Because food and plaque are easily trapped in the tiny spaces between your braces as well as underneath removable appliances or aligners, good oral hygiene is essential. Without regular brushing and flossing your teeth can become decayed or permanently stained, and your gums can become irritated and inflamed. There is also a greater risk of developing a dental infection.

Brushing after every meal, and flossing at least once a day, is the best way to ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy throughout the course of orthodontic care. We also encourage patients to brush or rinse their teeth as possible after eating snacks. Our office sometimes recommends certain items like a floss threader, a small interdental toothbrush (proxabrush), or an oral irrigator (water pick) to help keep the appliances, and all of the small spaces around the teeth, gums, and braces clean. Above all, throughout the course of orthodontic care, make sure to continue to see your general dentist regularly for routine checkups and care, including a thorough dental cleaning.

If you are wearing a removable retainer or clear aligner, we’ll also provide specific instructions on removing these appliances for short periods of time to brush, floss, and rinse your smile as well as how to safely and effectively clean them.

Not only is it important to keep the braces and your smile clean, but it’s also important to remember to to avoid foods that can increase your risk for cavities or cause damage your braces. While the temptation is always there, stay away from sticky sweets and hard, crunchy foods. Risky behavior and frequent appliance breakage can significantly prolong your treatment and possibly compromise the result. Although, there may be some foods to avoid during treatment, there are still many delicious and satisfying things that you can eat. You must remember, the important thing is to maintain a healthy and well-balanced diet.

At our office, we’re dedicated to providing the highest quality of skilled and compassionate care. For more information on our office and the many services that we provide, give us a call today.
